Choosing an EDC Flashlight: Lumens, Runtime, and Beam Distance Explained

Flashlight specs on a product page can look like a wall of numbers: lumens, lux, candela, runtime, beam distance. For everyday carry, three of those actually matter for how the light performs in your hand. Here's what to look at before you buy.

Lumens: Total Light Output

Lumens measure total brightness. More isn't always better for EDC: a 1,000-lumen light drains batteries fast and can wash out your night vision up close. For most everyday tasks, 300-600 lumens on the high setting is plenty, with a low mode (10-30 lumens) for reading a label or moving around at night without blinding yourself.

Runtime: How Long It Actually Lasts

Runtime is usually listed at the lowest useful brightness, not the highest, so a "20 hour runtime" spec rarely applies on turbo mode. A light's high mode might only run 1-2 hours before stepping down to protect the battery. For EDC, look for a light with a true low mode you'll actually use, since that's what gets you through a multi-day trip or a dead-battery emergency.

Beam Distance: Throw vs. Flood

Beam distance measures how far the light is still usable (rated to 0.25 lux, roughly full moonlight). A high beam-distance number means a focused "throw" beam, good for spotting something down a driveway or across a parking lot. A lower number with a wider spill means a "flood" beam, better for lighting up a room or close-up tasks. Many EDC lights blend both with an adjustable or dual-beam head.

What Actually Matters for EDC

  • Size and carry method: a pocket clip or keychain-ready body beats raw output if you won't actually carry the light
  • Rechargeable vs. battery: USB-C rechargeable lights are convenient day to day, but a light that also takes a standard CR123 or AA battery gives you a backup when you can't charge
  • Durability rating: look for an IP rating (IPX7 or IPX8 for water resistance) and an impact rating in meters if you'll drop it or use it outdoors
  • Modes you'll use: a simple high/low/strobe is more useful day to day than ten modes you'll never cycle through in the dark
